Metro Detroit is about to get the coldest air it has seen in years, and the dangerously cold temperatures could cause a number of school closings next week.
The 4Warn Weather team forecasts wind chills between 15 and 25 degrees below zero for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Schools are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but if wind chill temperatures are as low as expected, then school districts may decide to cancel classes for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Arctic outbreak brings cold temps
The cold temperatures are being brought to the region by an Arctic outbreak.
An Arctic outbreak is an extremely cold air mass that usually originates in the Siberian region of Asia.
The outbreak crosses over the North Pole and into Canada and pushes south and east into the U.S.
Timeline of sub-zero temperatures
The dangerously cold temperatures are expected in the region from Sunday through Wednesday.
Wind chills are expected to be 15-25 degrees below zero Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
By Wednesday afternoon, temperatures will get into the single digits below zero and up, so it will still be extremely cold in Metro Detroit.
