Morning fog, shower chance Monday, midweek wintry weather to impact Metro Detroit

Tracking chance for snow, ice Wednesday in Southeast Michigan

A Dense Fog Advisory will be in effect for Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties until 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3. Communities in these counties could see and have already seen visibility down to one-quarter mile or less.

Patchy dense fog may develop in places outside the advisory. Before temperatures rise above freezing overnight, some areas will experience freezing fog. This could lead to a thin layer of ice on surfaces. Drivers should slow down and allow extra time.

Sunday Night

Sunday night’s temperatures will be on the rise and temperatures will continue in that direction through Monday afternoon. The milder air and subsequent melting snow will lead to patchy dense fog in Southeast Michigan. Mist will also develop. The visibility will vary across the region, but the fog will be particularly dense south of I-94. Southerly winds will be light around 5 mph.

Monday

A few places in Southeast Michigan will pick up morning rain showers north of M-59. Communities north of I-69 will have a better chance of precipitation, which could fall as rain or a mix on Monday morning. (WDIV)

Temperatures will peak in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees in Adrian and Ann Arbor, lower to mid 40s in much of Metro Detroit, and around 40 degrees in the Thumb. Winds will shift from the southwest to the west at 5 to 15 mph. Gusts will reach 25 mph.

A slow-moving cold front will sweep across Metro Detroit on Monday evening, and temperatures will begin their descent. Under cloudy skies, lows will range from 20 to 25 degrees.

Temperatures will go for a roller coaster ride this week.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be a typical early-February day. Skies will be mostly cloudy with highs around 30 degrees. Nighttime temperatures will be up in the lower 20s.

Wednesday

Wednesday’s weather could create headaches for people. A system is currently on track to arrive in the afternoon with a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Afternoon temperatures are expected to be near freezing. During the night, freezing rain and black ice will be concerns. Temperatures fall into the upper 20s.

Thursday

There is a potential for the wintry mix to last into Thursday morning. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy with highs around 40 degrees. Lows will be around 20 degrees.

Friday and Weekend

Colder air will flow into Metro Detroit for Friday and next weekend. Highs will be in the lower 20s. Saturday will also bring another chance of snow.

If you are running low on salt or ice melt, consider buying some. A bag to keep in the trunk or cat litter could come in handy.

Then, there’s the forecast from the groundhogs

Punxsutawney Phil saw its shadow and predicted a longer winter during the nation’s most popular Groundhog Day event on Sunday morning, but this famous groundhog has a more accurate rival.

That rival is none other than Woody the Woodchuck of the Howell Nature Center. Woody called for sooner springlike conditions.
